SCX Beats Fundraising Target For Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice

22nd December 2015

The SCX Group has exceeded its annual fundraising target and raised over £5,500 for local charity Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

Every year, SCX employees take part in annual charity challenges to raise money for important causes. This year the Group chose Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice to be its leading cause after the charity, which offers care and support to children with a shortened life expectancy, provided help to an employee’s family member.

This year the bravest of SCX employees participated in three physically demanding challenges which all took place in the space of three weeks over the summer. The annual team target was to reach a total of £5,000 but so far an impressive £5,380 has been raised.

The first fundraising challenge, the SCX Spinners Coasts & Castles Mountain Bike Challenge, which took place on the 11th – 12th July, involved a 120 mile two day ride from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Newcastle following the scenic Northumberland Coastline. Despite the gale winds and a couple of falls, the team managed to pull through and raised a total of just over £1,100.

The second challenge involved another SCX Spinner cycling expedition, this time from Edinburgh to Whitby on the 26th – 27th July. Following some steep climbs and undulating plains under wet, cold and windy conditions, the route proved to be a real test of endurance for the team but they managed to ride 214 miles over two days and raised just over £1,000.

For the third and final challenge, 26 SCX employees summoned all of their strength to take part in the notoriously gruelling Tough Mudder event in Yorkshire on 1st August. Ready to get their hands dirty for charity, staff members waded through pools of thick, heavy mud and clay, bundling their way through a 10-12 mile obstacle course. The team finished in just under 5 hours and raised almost £1,000 for their sterling efforts.

In addition to the three charity sporting challenges, the SCX Group has held a variety of other fundraising events throughout the year such as dress-down days, lunch days, a horse racing event, a James Bond cinema event and most recently a fundraiser for Christmas jumper day.

Mandy Rafferty, Corporate Fundraiser said: “At Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, we care for children and young adults with life-shortening and life-threatening conditions. It costs more than £4m to keep our doors open for families and we receive less than 10% government funding, so we are so grateful that SCX have chosen to support us. The money they have raised will help us to make some amazing memories for our children and families.”

Simon Eastwood, Managing Director of the SCX Group, is proud of the contribution that SCX has made to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, “Part of our work ethos at SCX is to nurture and encourage our peers and work hard at what we do and this has been applied in all of our team fundraising efforts. This is our fourth year running sporting charity challenges and it’s been remarkable to witness so much enthusiasm from our staff over the years. The Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice is a cause especially close to our hearts and we have received so much support and care from all those involved this year, it’s been great to see what our combined efforts have achieved.”
