SCX Charity Challenges 2015

19th March 2015

This year, The SCX Group has chosen a new cause for its 2015 Charity Challenges: the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

Over recent years, the bravest of SCX’s employees have volunteered to take part in gruelling physical challenges in order to raise money for a worthwhile cause. This year, we have three challenges lined up with the aim of raising a massive £10,000 for Bluebell Wood, which offers care and support to children with a shortened life expectancy, and has recently earned a special significance in the hearts of SCX employees.

Already this year, we’ve had two lunchtime bake-off events and a dress down day which have raised £450 between them.

To provide a real push towards that massive target, we’re hoping to continue, and beat, the success of previous physical challenges:

This year’s events are:

11 – 12 July:
A mountain bike ride from Berwick-upon-Tweed, following the coast down via Holy Island (tides permitting) to Newcastle;a rugged 120 miles over the two days.

Update: The Coasts and Castles Challenge was a huge success. An early 7:15am start on Saturday from Berwick-Upon-Tweed to catch the tide for a trip over to Holy Island turned into a gloriously sunny day in the saddle with stunning scenery. Three riders came off, but no real damage was done, and 56 miles were covered in total.

Sunday completed the journey from Alnmouth down to Newcastle quayside on a much more challengingly windy day, but only one faller this time. The ride finished at 4:15pm after another 52 miles: 108 miles in total over the two days.

25 – 26 July:
A road cycle ride starting in Edinburgh and covering 100miles per day over two days, via Newcastle and finishing in Whitby.

Update: The road cycle ride was a tough challenge, with Sunday being one of the toughest, wettest, coldest and windiest trips some of our cyclists had ever undertaken.

Saturday was the better of the two days weather-wise, with 110miles covered to get the riders from Edinburgh and into England. Sunday saw some unpleasant weather and something of a detour from the original plan, adding an extra 10miles and 300m of climb to the journey. With over 104 miles covered on Sunday to get them to Whitby, the riders finally made it back to Sheffield at 23:30 on Sunday night - we have a few rather sleepy employees today!

1 August:
The infamous Tough Mudder: A 10-12 mile (18-20 km) team challenge that incorporates exhilarating world-class obstacles with the rough, rolling fields, daringly dense woodlands, streams, bogs and pools of thick, heavy mud and clay of the Yorkshire moorland.

Update: The team completed the course in just over 5 hours, all sticking together throughout, with only one drop-out due to a knee injury sustained early on in the course.
